How to prepare your home for interior painting

A practical interior painting preparation checklist for Orlando homeowners: furniture, wall repairs, colors, access and what to confirm before work.

The short answer

Before interior painting, agree on the rooms and surfaces, protect or move personal belongings, flag wall damage, and confirm who handles furniture and surface preparation. A clear plan is more useful than doing every preparation task yourself.

Start with the surfaces, not just the color

A room can mean more than four walls. Decide whether ceilings, trim, doors or an accent wall are part of the project. If you are considering cabinets or connected drywall repairs, include those in the same request so the work can be reviewed together.

Approximate room sizes and ceiling heights help explain the project. Tell Yuzu about the existing finish and the look you want. Final colors, finishes and the amount of preparation should be confirmed before work begins—not guessed from a photograph alone.

Make a plan for furniture and personal items

Remove fragile belongings and wall decor when you can do so safely. Discuss large furniture before moving it: some pieces may be repositioned within the room, while others may need a different arrangement. The goal is clear access and protection, not unnecessary heavy lifting.

Ask who will move or cover furniture and protect the floor. Those responsibilities belong in the confirmed scope. If the home will remain occupied, discuss which rooms need to stay usable and how household routines will work around the project.

  • Identify fragile items, artwork and electronics.
  • Discuss heavy furniture rather than moving it without a plan.
  • Confirm floor protection and furniture covering.
  • Plan where children and pets will be during work.

Point out damage before it is painted over

Holes, cracks, peeling areas and stains can change the preparation required. Make a short list of the locations and explain whether the issue is new or has returned. Yuzu can review drywall repair and texture matching as part of the painting scope when needed.

An active leak or other underlying issue needs attention before cosmetic work. New paint is not a solution for unresolved moisture. If you are unsure what is causing a stain, describe it rather than treating it as a color problem. Yuzu can review how to help, including contractor recommendations for needs beyond the painting scope.

Confirm colors, access and the daily plan

Look at your shortlisted colors in the room's natural and artificial light before settling on a choice. A sample can help you compare the color against flooring, cabinets and furniture. Ask about finish options based on how each surface is used.

For an Orlando-area home, include parking, gate arrangements and any community requirements in the request. Exterior work may involve separate HOA color approvals, even when it is paired with an interior project. Before scheduling, confirm the scope, household access and any preparation expected from you. Share private access details directly when arrangements are agreed.
